The Artillery Arms - Moorgate

102 Bunhill Row, London EC1Y 8ND

05-02-2008

The Artillery is a rare example of a good pub in the too-trendy location of old street and hoxton. Although it gets mega busy on a friday evening, you are always left with the sense that you know about a good thing when many don't.

The beer is excellent (fullers pub) and the price is very reasonable. They will show the football and if you can get a seat I guarantee you will stay all night.

The upstairs bit is lesser known, so check it if it is busy downstairs. It is also a great place for a relaxing sunday pint - very quiet and good for meeting friends away from the bustle of old street.

Recommended for all occasions, especially if going out in hoxton later on.

Als Bar Cafe - Clerkenwell

11 Exmouth Market, London EC1R 4QD

05-02-2008

Al's Bar is a great favourite of mine because of its versatility... It is a great place to finish off your evening if you have been drinking elsewhere as it is open late every night and has no cover charge. The clientele can occasionly be a bit media-luvvy, but thats the price you pay for having the Guardian down the road...

The DJs are decent, and sometimes impromptu dancing can occur in the small basement. Excellent range of beers and well located for cabs etc.

On the flipside, it is also a great place to have your hangover cure of a fried breakfast. Long trestle tables outside are great if there are a few of you, and you can get rid of the headache whilst reading the paper and supping coffe, watching the other patrons of exmouth market go about their business.

Al in all, a good place to know about.

The Golden Lion - Kings Cross

2 Britannia Street, Kings Cross, London WC1X 9JE

05-02-2008

The Golden Lion is a good pub for the area - trendy, but with a decent selection of good beers. It is a gay bar, but there is no issue of exclusivity and it is very open and comfortable.

Situated just over 5 minutes from Kings Cross, it is easy to get to. They have recently overhauled their entertainment, and there is usually something happening most nights, from pub quizzes to bingo, often hosted by a friendly-neighbourhood transvestite!

Food is also available, and there are a lot of people in who are staying at one of the many local hotels.

As it is also open late, it can be handy if you don't want to queue at any of the other late bars around the area - the scala and the big chill house.

Duke On The Green - Fulham

275 New Kings Road, Parsons Green, London SW6 4XG

05-02-2008

The Duke On The Green has always been a decent watering hole, but since its refurbishment has moved up a class. The bar is busy, bustling but never overcrowded (unless Chelsea are at home!). There are big tables and a couple of comfy chairs - great for drinks after work.

The range of beers and wines is good, and a friendly table service marks this place out from others around Parsons Green.

The restaurant is also fantastic - a brillliant selection of dishes, all freshly prepared and of a very high standard. It isn't the cheapest place around, but it is well worth it.

Add to that the again excellent ser vice and a large choice of wines, this is a great place to dine.

Union Tavern - Clerkenwell

52 Lloyd Baker St, Clerkenwell, London WC1X 9AA

05-02-2008

The Union Tavern is a very pleasant, well turned-out pub on the fringe of clerkenwell. It is friendly and relaxed, with a nice old-style decor (big mirrors, engraved panes etc) with a good choice of wines and beers.

It also has an excellent restaurant that is well priced and well done, which explains its popularity with the locals as well as the many people who stay at the local hotels.

Upstairs is a big function room that can be hired for a party, and the clientele are friendly. The bar staff go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your drink or meal, and it is never unbearably busy

All in all, it is a classy experience that will impress your friends without denting your wallet too heavily...

The Carpenters Arms - Londyn

Kings Cross Road, London WC1X 9LR

05-02-2008

The Carpenters Arms is a nice 'local' pub 10 minutes from the station. There is often entertainment here on the weekend (karaoke, live turns) and it is down to earth without snobbery.

It can feel a little dead on a weekday evening, but all in all it is a good place for a quiet drink and a game of darts. There is always a decent mix of people in here and the staff are very accomodating.

You do get a few stag partys in on a weekend having a drink before hitting town (it is between 3 large hotels) but there is always a good atmosphere. Worth a look if you are at a loose end.

Northumberland Arms Kings Cross - Londyn

Kings Cross Road, London WC1X 9LJ

05-02-2008

Although there are not many places to go to drink in Kings Cross, you do need an excuse to go to this place. It is a basic, spartan pub that is very bright and frequented mainly by workmen from the many building projects currently on the go.

There is a pool table and plenty of space, and although it is not intimidating, it does feel a little depressing once you are in. On the upside, it is very cheap and can be a good place to get a late drink if you don't fancy queueing with drunk teenagers at the big chill house...

All in all this is a belt n braces kind of place - ok for a quick one with mates, but don't bring your first date here!!

Calthorpe Project - Bloomsbury

258-274 Grays Inn Road, London WC1X 8LH

05-02-2008

The Calthorpe Project is a lovely little green space only 5 minutes from the bustle of Kings Cross Station. There is a community centre, basketball hoops and a childrens playground, replete with colourful murals, but it is the gardens that are most attractive.

It is a great place to relax in the summer, just to get a little peace and quiet. Although a popular place for lunching with local workers and students, it is easy to get your own little space to take a bit of r n r for yourself.

There is a pleasant little trail to follow, and it is also a great place to relax with the papers on a weekend.

The Fryers Delight - Bloomsbury

19 Theobalds Road, London WC1X 8SL

05-02-2008

The Fryers Delight is a great change from the myriad collection of kebab shops, fried chicken outlets and generally unimaginitive fast food in central london. It is a proper 'old school' chippy, complete with an eat-in menu at one of the formica tables inside.

It sells proper chips at a reasonable price and is great to grab a snack from if you are heading into town. Alternatively, treat yourself to a sit down meal of fish n chips, bread and butter and a nice mug of tea.

Its clientele are locals and office workers who are in the know, and whilst it is always busy, you never have to wait too long to get served! A steady stream of taxi drivers is all the advertising that a place like this needs...

Paolina's - Kings Cross

London WC1X 9DB

05-02-2008

Paolina's Thai Cafe is my favourite in Kings Cross. The dilapidated exterior hides a gem of a place that is pretty much off the radar.

If you don't know it, you wouldn't give it a second glance, but once you have been you will back for more. It is an extremely friendly, family run restaurant with the emphasis on no frills.

That doesn't mean that the quality of the food is compromised - far from it. I have eaten there countless times and the food has always been magnificent - the green curry is hot and spicy, the starters fantastic, and it is very reasonably priced. Add to that the fact that you have to bring your wine/beer etc, it makes an excellent alternative to fast food when you are on a night out.

Payment is cash only, although you can usually pay for dinner out of the change in your pocket!
