A great museum to re-visit, as the exhibits change regularly. The cafe is good, and fairly cheap, and the more permanent exhibitions include creepy crawlies, art and mummies.

The new dinosaur gallery is superb… as well as the obligatory massive skeleton (a Cetiosaurus), you can have the sensation of standing on the sea-bed as marine dinosaurs swim overhead.

It’s not a massive museum, so allow yourself an hour or two at most and (if you can) pop after 6-12 months to see what’s new.

2010-11 was a phenomenal time for Leicestershire Road Club, seeing two CLub members go on to become world champions (Dan McLay and Lucy Garner). Both riders benefitted from indoor winter training at the Clubroom, which was built by the members themselves.
As well as some very good riders and coaches, the Club organises several events and has the usual training rides and benefits you can expect from a Club. Like anything voluntary, the more you put in the more you get out. If you prefer riding alone and don’t like to volunteer, this is not the Club for you.

For a sunny day at half-term, this place is perfect. As well as the cafe, there is a community orchard, a field full of cows, an adventure playground and a woodland walk.

The visitor centre itself was designed to show-case green technology, and was kick-started in 2001 with £1m of lottery money. Some of the technology appears to need updating, and it could be better explained to visitors.

However, the park is great. It feels like open countryside, despite being only a mile or two from the centre of Leicester. Well worth a half-day visit.

If you like competitive running, but can't be bothered with the entry forms and inevitable sponsorship, parkrun is for you. It's free to enter, registration is once only and there are 5km timed runs across the UK at 9am every Saturday.

I registered and printed off my barcode yesterday, for a run today. The Braunstone course is easy to follow, with marshals and signs, and all I had to do was collect a token as I finished. My results get logged at www.parkrun.com, so I can now turn up at 9am every Saturday, at any parkrun, and compete against my own PB and my age group.

Call me old-fashioned, but that's what running is all about. None of the fluffy stuff like filling out forms, dressing as a banana or getting in the car to run around a stately home. I can't wait for the first parkruncycle, or parkswimcyclerun, or... (you get the idea).

I realise you can't plan for everything, but in the event of snow/ice/wind or an accident/hypothermia/getting lost while on a long hike, it's good to have a few calories in your back-pack. So I ordered two rounds of cheese sandwiches from the Croft House Cafe to supplement our Lion Bars.

There was nothing on view, but I was told it was £4.80 for two brown rolls, and to come back later.

After 15 mins, I asked if they were ready and seemed to walk in on a row between the two staff ("What did she say, I can't hear through walls", that kind of thing). I handed over the money having still not seen the food. So it was a bit of a disappointment to get two, tiny rolls of the kind that Asda sell at 70p for 9, with a sprinkling of grated cheese.

Unfortunately, the nearest competition was probably in Cockermouth. Which is a shame because, much as I hate brands, at that moment I'd have done anything for the predicatability of a Gregg's pasty or Pret a Manger egg mayonnaise on brown.

We loved this place! James and Kelly have spent 18 months creating a stylish, country house B&B. You can spend the evening with the other residents in a shared sitting room, and will get a massive 'full English' to see you through the day.

Some details for you: £25 each for B&B (£30 for en-suite), lots of camping space and a drying room if you're the hardy outdoor type, and a 20 minute stroll along the lakeside to Buttermere. Nuff said.

There are only two pubs in Buttermere where you can eat in the evenings. At our B&B they recommended this one because 'the prices were lower and the portions were bigger'. At £8 for half a chicken and chips, you can't disagree with that.

We went mid-week and out of season, but despite being in our 40s were the youngest in the pub. The decor, it has to be said, was probably older than us.

Don't let that put you off, though. The two beers we tried, Crag Rat and Thirst Out, were good local brews and they had another half a dozen on tap. If you're lucky enough to visit the Lakes when it's not raining, save enough energy to walk to the pub so you can sample a few more.

Like many, I am very nervous about getting other people to do work on my house. So I will always try to get a recommendation, which is never easy when you are new to an area. To make matters worse, I never met these guys because they came to see the flat when I was out. But their quotation was good, they kept me informed and were on time, so they got the job.
When they arrived, they told me exactly what they were going to do and they left the flat spotless, vacuuming every room :-)
It's a tough time to be a small business, but these guys work hard and I have no hesitation in recommending them.
